SUGGESTED BOOKS
OUR BOOKS
There are a variety of books that I will have written at some point. Some sooner than others. Read more…
RELATIONSHIPS
I highly suggest the following books for relationship specific communication. I’ve listed the books in order of time priority. So if you only have time for one book, then number one book listed. If you only have time for two books, then numbers one and two books listed. That sort of thing. Also note, they all can be found on Audible to listen to while you do chores around the home, driving, doing some exercise, etc. Hard copies are also going to be useful because they have tons of info you really want to take notes on.

Book Summaries
- “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus” is a book you may have heard of before. You may know it is about the differences between men and women in relationships. Even just that isn’t important enough to know. It legit is going to tell you not a few, but many critical understandings that are subtle but important to know about the differences between men and women (in general) in terms of how statements are interpreted, how we process emotions, etc. Once you get into it, your mind just may be blown.
- “Communication Miracles for Couples” legit is miracle level communication information for couples.
- “Now You’re Speaking My Language”, while it has a fair bit of Christian talk in the book, the strategies related to solid and long lasting relationships is amazing stuff. Tons of great examples for the strategies. You will definitely learn the “I statements” stuff in this book to a high degree.
- “The Relationship Cure” is going to teach you about bids of connection. You may not even notice it is happening but when you hear about how it works, it will be a game changer. They legit can predict divorces with just this one thing. Such an easy thing to improve/fix.
- “He Wins, She Wins” is a great book that talks about negotiation that is specific to relationships. It will help you understand the different ways couples can operate and the most effective way of doing the negotiations and create harmony and happiness that lasts.
- “Attached” is about relationship attachment styles. A lot of communication stuff results from these different styles. I imagine a lot of people with trauma stuff will have insecure attachments that affect their communication.
- “Communication in Marriage” gives a lot of great advice on how to communicate better with your partner as the title implies.

Book Summaries
- “Non-Violent Communication” is one of the most incredible books I have ever had the privilege to experience. It talks a great deal about how people generally talk versus what is below that form of talking. That stuff below is something we can bring out into the open and avoid the problems of how we generally speak with one another or even understand one another. Instead of giving judgements we can express our observation and our feelings in response to it. We can help others do the same so they can unburden and be heard. It also talks about the needs and requests we have that are related to the observations and feelings. There is more in other circumstances but it comes down to the elements of what we observe, what we feel, what we need, and what we or others want / request in some form or another. If there was only one book in the entirety of human kind I could have a person read, it would be this book. It changed my life forever.
- “Speaking Peace” is another non-violent communication book by Marshal Rosenberg. It is a shorter book, but it has some variations in explanations and stories that I think are very beneficial even if you have read through the longer “Non-Violent Communication” book.
- De-Escalate – If you loved “Non-Violent Communication” book as I did, this book will also be amazing to you. It talks about ‘Affect Labeling’. That would be the process of labeling another person’s affect. When they speak to you and seem to have some kind of feeling embedded in their statements, then you can label those feelings. It will show them that you understand what they are feeling and that they are being heard. It will allow them to further unwrap their feelings and you can label those too. Within a short amount of time, 90 seconds of less most often, you will have helped them de-escalate their high emotions and come back to a place of being able to do some problem solving and reasoning. You’ve connected with them, showed you understand them at a deep level, and helped them become calm again as they and you want them to be. This book was written in response to this process working so effectively in prisons and high conflict marriage mediation scenarios. A must read for sure. Useful for everyone you ever interact with. Especially those you are close with.
- “Crucial Conversations” is a book that gives you practical tools to deal with high stakes and high emotional conversation scenarios. Along with the practical tools, it gives you a lot of psychological understanding of communication situations and the people within them, most importantly, yourself.
- “Never Split The Difference” was written by a hostage negotiator and gives you a lot of psychological understanding and strategies in how to deal with tough negotiation situations with empathy and great strength.
- “Getting to Yes” is a fantastic book that gives a lot of powerful understanding and tools to negotiate with people in all areas of life. It does so while moving away from power games and being more cooperative than adversarial in nature.
- “Getting Together” is yet another fantastic book by the same folks that created “Getting to Yes”. This book focuses even more on the cooperative and relationship aspect of negotiation. When I say relationship, I mean the general term, not the romantic kind of relationship. Though it does have a lot of useful application there as well.
- Sidenote: For a book that focuses on negotiation more on the romantic partnership kind of way, look at the book “He Wins, She Wins” that is listed in the Relationships book list.
