People seem to have different views of how the term atheism should be defined. Some believe that it should just mean there is a non-belief in theism. This tends to be what people would consider to be an agnostic view of if there is a god or gods. Other people believe it should mean there is an anti-belief of theism as in they make an affirmative claim that there is no god or gods.
There is an issue of being binary in two different ways. Firstly is a binary conception where the two poles exist with a central neutral point. Secondly is a binary conception where two poles exist without a central neutral point. There are some categorization issues when it comes to linguistics and logic in general that people have issues with. This problem happens in many different conceptual topics.
People seem to assume that a zero of something is a negative of the positive position of something. Why? Because the inverse of a positive position on a spectrum is a 0 in a timeline that starts at 0 and is a negative of that positive position on a timeline that includes negative numbers.
Example 1 – The dichotomy of hate and love. People assuming that you can only hate or love something or someone. However there is a third option of indifference. A position of neither hating nor loving the person. People start off indifferent when it comes to new people. People can end indifferent when it comes to people that they have known. People tend to lean one way or another but not quite get to a zone of hate nor love. A person can lean towards love but not love a person. That would be something like that they are friendly or that they enjoy being around the person but that they do not feel love for that person. The same for hate. A person can lean towards hate but just find someone annoying or frustrating to be around but not hate them.
Example 2 – If I said I don’t believe John Doe about xyz, that doesn’t mean I think John Doe is lying. It just means I don’t have a claim of believing what John Doe has said because there wasn’t enough presented to cause a belief to be formed about xyz.
Example 3 – The dichotomy of black and white. People can categorize white to have an inverse of black which is true and just forget that there is a spectrum that can be created which creates a gray at the mixture of black and white. So if you take white and take away half of it it becomes gray.
Then we have something that is similar in the way in which the way theism and atheism are formed. That would be the terms of morality. Morality has three main terms; moral, immoral, and amoral. When it comes to atheism usage it seems reasonable to model the terms after what is done with the moral terms.
- moral, immoral, amoral
- theist, itheist, atheist
Moral and Theist as root forms of terms
- i- as a prefix to signify an an inverse position
a- as a prefix to signify an agnostic position
Morality
- Moral meaning a positive position of morality
- Immoral meaning a negative position of morality
- Amoral meaning an neutral position of morality
Theism
- Theist meaning a positive position of god or gods being real
- Itheist meaning a negative position of god or gods being real
- Atheist meaning a neutral position of god or gods being real
