WHAT IS CONSCIOUSNESS?
Going from non-consciousness to consciousness. Starting now…
Consciousness:
the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings.
“she failed to regain consciousness and died two days later”
Or stated more simply, self aware.
Aware:
having knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.
“most people are aware of the dangers of sunbathing”
Most often times people think about consciousness as being just a complex version of reaction. Let’s look at that more in depth with the idea of thresholds. The boundary at which something goes from one thing to another thing. Like between the inside of your house to the outside of your house. Or, the end of a chapter in a book to the beginning of a new chapter in that book.
Threshold:
the magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded for a certain reaction, phenomenon, result, or condition to occur or be manifested.
“nothing happens until the signal passes the threshold”
Reaction to Consciousness Examples:
Plastic strip vs Flame
A plastic strip will react to flame via simple physics. It will soften and deform. It is not alive. It does not have a brain..
Bacteria vs Environment
A bacteria will react to various things like chemicals or light. It is alive. It does not have a brain..
Nematode vs Environment
A nematode has a simple neural network. 19 neurons in the neural network. It is alive. It does have a brain, a simple brain.
It can react with very simple decision making. It has knowledge or perception of a situation or fact, in a very simple way. So it is aware of the surroundings, in a very simple way.
